You don't have to like Nicki Minaj, or even know anything about her for this to be an important story to write. But, who was the story for? OUT magazine is an LGBT fashion, entertainment and lifestyle magazine. It has the largest readership of any LGBT magazine. So, it is for those readers. If you weren't necessarily the target audience, this article may not be for you. This is your first lesson in how targeting something to the audience is important, but can alienate other readers.
Now, why was this an important story for OUT to write. Minaj has single-handedly changed the landscape for female hip-hop artists. Her influence and impact on the community has made quite the splash, and has begun to ripple outwards. The perception is that rappers have to be tough, which has made it very hard for female or LGBT rappers to find success. Instead, Minaj appealed to the expansive LGBT community which skyrocketed her to fame.
How am I personally impacted by the story? Well, for me, I like that someone with different qualities was able to break a barrier in order to follow her dream. But, the biggest thing I take away from this story is that being your authentic self may not always get you where you want to go. I don't know if Minaj is authentic or not. She's used alter-egos and shock tactics to be seen, but that may just have been something to get people's attention, and it worked. Regardless of this, she seems a shining example of someone who did what she wanted to do and did what she had to do in order to follow her dreams, and that's something everyone can relate to. We all have dreams. They aren't easy to achieve. But, hard work does pay off. This also begs the question of ethics. Do we have to compromise our ethics in order to get where we want to go?
